Ngunguru soaked as storm dumps 189mm
Ngunguru recorded 189.5mm of rain over the weekend, making it the second-wettest location in Northland during the recent weather bomb.
While the highest rainfall was measured at Punaruku, regional council data shows Ngunguru experienced rainfall well above what is normally expected in mid-summer. For context, parts of Northland typically receive around 80mm over an entire January, meaning Ngunguru saw more than double that amount in a single event.
The heaviest rain fell overnight on Saturday and into early Sunday, during a period of thunderstorm warnings and an orange rain warning issued by MetService. Intensities across the east coast reached torrential levels, contributing to surface flooding, saturated ground, and increased risk of slips.
With soils now heavily soaked, authorities warn that further rain later this week could trigger additional flooding or land movement, even if totals are lower than the weekend event.
Residents are being urged to stay alert, avoid stormwater and contaminated waterways, and keep an eye on official updates as recovery efforts continue.
