On 3 January 2025, Gordon Pengelly spotted a boat struggling on Elizabeth Reef from his deck at Whananaki South. Acting fast, he launched his own boat and drew on decades of surf lifesaving experience to rescue a man and his dog from the choppy waters.
The man was saved immediately, but it would take five tense days before Rimu the dog was found, alive and well, near Whale Bay.
