In an interview with Whananaki FM, the Department of Conservation says it will step up patrols at the Whananaki South freedom camp and meet with locals at the end of summer to discuss the future of the reserve.
DOC Whangārei operations manager Rob Akuhata acknowledged ongoing problems, including overflowing bins, packed portaloos and campers staying far longer than the two–three days allowed.
“There’s been a number of issues over the years, and it’s not been the best outcome for residents,” Akuhata told Whananaki FM, adding that there’s now an opportunity for DOC and the community to collectively decide what needs to change.
Local resident Janice Mander said pressure on the site has intensified in recent years, while Ian Peters believes the area should be treated as a day-use spot rather than a long-stay camp.
DOC concedes the current setup isn’t working, with further discussions planned once the summer peak wraps up.
