Local Community Makes Waves at Annual Paddle the Awa Event
On Monday 5 January, the awa became a place of movement, learning, and connection as 30 local participants took part in the annual Paddle the Awa event. Launching from Halvorson Road Bridge, paddlers travelled with the tide, experiencing the river up close while building paddle skills, observing local biodiversity, and collecting marine debris along the way.
Led by Samara and the passionate Mountains to Sea Conservation Trust team, the event was a free, whānau-friendly opportunity to reconnect with the awa and each other. Supported by Whangārei District Council and Foundation North, with kai provided by Te Whana o te Nanakia Trust (CLD), the day showcased what’s possible when community, care, and conservation come together.
Even for those watching from the sidelines, the impact was clear ~ this was one of those quietly powerful local moments that leaves a mark.
Hats off to Samara and the Mountains to Sea team for continuing to create accessible, meaningful experiences on the water. Those who missed out won’t have to wait long, with more events planned over summer, including a FREE Community Snorkel Day at Otamure on 26 January.
One to admire. One to join next time.
