Towering waves ripped Captain Jean-Raymond Thomas from his family in 1975, during one of Northland’s deadliest maritime disasters.
This week, the French captain returned to New Zealand to honor the 50th anniversary of the Capitaine Bougainville tragedy, which claimed the lives of 16 crew and passengers.
